The Arundel lower garden has been EGC’s home base since launching our organization in 2019. In addition to providing more than a thousand students with school-based curriculum and Green Team time, as well as partnering hundreds of volunteers in dozens of workdays and thousands of hours of volunteer time, Arundel has been the original pilot site for multiple new programs as we expanded our scope and depth of programming over the years. The metaphorical fruits of that learning now benefit thousands of students and volunteers annually across San Mateo County – and it all started with Arundel! This summer the district commences a major expansion at Arundel Elementary, with the plan to transform the garden space into a new kindergarten classroom wing.
Arroyo Elementary’s garden and outdoor classroom has served as a place for students to gather, do garden work and learn about plants, both originally as a district-led project and starting in February 2020 in partnership with EGC. Throughout our partnership, EGC fully funded its open recess student groups, student club support, and community workdays to keep the garden available for hundreds of Arroyo and Central students to explore, learn and get their hands dirty. Next school year Arroyo’s garden space will be repurposed by the school to bring about the next adventure in learning for Arroyo and Central students! We are so appreciative of the hard work local service groups and students put into maintaining this space and keeping it accessible for all.
We wish the District and these school communities best wishes in their upcoming endeavors, and look forward to reuniting with Carlmont- and Redwood High School-bound students in our partnered gardens there in the future!
